GENERAL RECONNAISSANCE WORK. The earliest report on the geology of the region is by James Blake. 1 In the early seventies he examined Pueblo Mountain, which lies directly to the south of Steens and is, in part, defined on both sides by continuations of the same faults.
Here are exposed both the southern continuation of the Steens Mountain volcanic series and the underlying crystalline rocks on. Bed rock in the Rock Island area of northeastern Le Flore County in southeastern Oklahoma consists of shale, siltstone, and sandstone of the McAlester, Hartshorne, and Atoka Formations of Pennsylvanian age.
The area is on the south flank of the Backbone anticline; the rocks dip to the south at 5oo. Alluvium along James Fork consists of sandy and clayey silt and may be as much as 30 feet thick.

McALESTER TEXARKANA- Shale, gray to tan, with many fine- to coarse-grained, quartzose, micaceous sandstone with many bottom markings; top eroded; thickness, 3, to 7, feet or more; unconformable upon Goddard, Delaware Creek, Woodford, and older beds that are exposed north and west of Ti Valley Fault.
LeFlore County is in the extreme eastern part of the state. It is a large county, having an area of 1, square miles. Of this amount, about 50 square miles, is very mountainous, including Sugar Loaf mountain and Mt. Cavanal, two of the highest elevations in the state.
Over 1, square miles were originally covered with a heavy forest growth. Trahern's Station was a stage stand on the old Butterfield Overland Mail route in Indian Territory. It was located in what is now Le Flore County, Oklahoma.
The station was named for Judge James N. Trahern, the stage agent. Trahern was a Choctaw Indian and a long-time county judge for Skullyvil.
